The Centre for Spartan & Peloponnesian Studies (CSPS) welcomes expressions of interest (EoIs) from outstanding postdoctoral scholars who wish to apply for a prestigious British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship through the University of Nottingham.

We invite EoIs from eligible candidates whose research projects and interests fall within the remit of the CSPS:https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/csps/about-csps.aspx . We also collaborate with the Nottingham-based CADRE – Centre for Ancient Drama and its Reception, CLABS – Centre for Byzantine and Late Antique Studies  and the new N-MESH Laboratories (The Nottingham Materials and Environment Science and Heritage Laboratories:https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/arts/n-mesh/n-mesh.aspx a partnership between the Department of Classics and Archaeology, with its newly refurbished labs and equipment, and other facilities across the University, including laboratories and capabilities in Life Sciences and in Medicine and Health Sciences). Eligibility: British citizens and any nationals from the EEA are eligible, regardless of where their doctorate was obtained. Anyone of any nationality who has a doctorate from a UK university is eligible. If an applicant does not meet the prior categories, they may be accepted if they can demonstrate ‘strong prior association’ with the UK academic community. Applicants must be of Early Career status, meaning they must apply within three years from the date of their successful viva voce examination. For this round of competition, applicants are expected to have completed their viva voce between 1 April 2022 and 1 April 2025.

Duration: Fellowships are tenable for 3 years (36 months) on a full-time basis. The British Academy will support requests to hold the award part-time over a proportionately longer period for health-related reasons, disability or childcare commitments.

Expressions of interest: Candidates should send Dr Chrysanthi Gallou, CSPS Director (chrysanthi.gallou@nottingham.ac.uk), by 5pm, Monday 19 August 2024:

  • a copy of their CV (max. 2 A4 pages)
  • a description of their proposed research project (max 2 A4 pages, excluding references)
  • a summary of why the University of Nottingham and the Centre for Spartan & Peloponnesian Studies are a good fit for the project (max. 300 words)
  • the name of their proposed referee.

Late or incomplete EoIs will not be considered.

All shortlisted candidates will receive further support from the Centre as well as the Faculty of Arts Research Accelerator Team, to develop and enhance their application before submission to the British Academy.

The scheme’s official deadline for submissions and UK institutional approval is Wednesday 2 October 2024 (17:00 BST).
